"Jeux Pluriels" (Plural Games) is my graduation short film made in the animation school "La Poudrière".
It´s a fake documentary that mixes live action and animation. It portrays the work of Luigi Finisera, a man who has spent more than twenty years of his life building unplayable board games.
This short film is in part a tribute to a genre that has rarely been used in animation and a homage to outsider art.
The challenge was to make a movie in which the audience had pleasure at not understanding what they are watching. For that purpose, the short combines a very atypical theme for animation, a character that speaks in a barely comprehensible language and a set of games that, even when described in detail, have no sense at all.
The short film references numerous outsider artist, and borrows inspiration from filmmakers like Peter Greenaway, Jan Svankmajer or the brothers Quay.
The name of the main character makes reference to Luigi Serafini, author of the "Codex Seraphinianus", the voice over is interpreted by the legendary French filmmaker Luc Moullet and the soundtrack is composed by Pierre Bastien, a renowned experimental composer who use machines and robots built of mecano pieces that play all kinds of instruments.
The short film was bought by Arte Tv for its broadcasting and selected in the Clermont-Ferrand international short film festival in 2010.
"Jeux Pluriels" es mi cortometraje de fin de año realizado en la escuela de animación "La Poudrière".
Se trata de un falso documental que mezcla imagen real y animación. Retrata el trabajo de Luigi Finisera, un hombre que ha pasado más de veinte años de su vida fabricando juegos de mesa injugables.
El cortometraje es por un lado un tributo a un género cinematográfico que muy rara vez ha sido utilizado en animación y por otro un homenaje al "Art Brut".
El reto consistía en hacer una película en la que el público disfrute de no entender lo que está viendo. Para ello, el corto combina una temática muy atípica en animación, un personaje que habla de una manera prácticamente incomprensible y unos juegos de mesa que, aún explicados clara y concienzudamente, no tienen ni pies ni cabeza.
El cortometraje hace numerosas alusiones a diversos artistas de "Art Brut" y referencia el trabajo de realizadores de los que se ha visto inspirado tales como Peter Greenaway, Jan Svankmajer o los hermanos Quay.
El nombre del personaje principal hace referencia a Luigi Serafini, autor del "Codex Seraphinianus", la voz en off es interpretada por el legendario realizador de documentales francés Luc Moullet y la banda sonora está compuesta por Pierre Bastien, un reputado músico experimental que utiliza máquinas y autómatas fabricados con piezas de mecano que tocan todo tipo de instrumentos musicales.
El cortometraje fue adquirido para su emisión en televisión por Arte Tv y fue seleccionado en el festival de cortometraje de Clermont-Ferrand en 2010.

Il s'agit d'un faux documentaire qui mélange de la prise de vue réelle et de l'animation. C'est un portrait de Luigi Finisera, un homme qui a passé plus de vingt ans à fabriquer des jeux de société injouables.
Le court-métrage est d'un coté un tribut à un genre cinématographique très rarement utilisé en animation et dans un autre un hommage à l´Art Brut.
Le défi était en faire un film dans lequel le publique aille plaisir à ne pas comprendre ce qu'il regarde. Pour cela, le court mélange une thématique très atypique en animation, un personnage qui parle de façon presque incompréhensible et des jeux de société, que même quand sont claire et précisément expliqués, n'ont pas aucun sens.
Le court-métrage fait des nombreuses allusions à des divers artistes brut et fait référence au travail des réalisateurs desquels il est inspiré, tels comme Peter Greenaway, Jan Svankmajer ou les frères Quay.
